Unban appeals: banned users ask for a second chance

Banned users file an appeal by DM to yurna and answer your questions. Your team decides in a channel or in the dashboard.

SetupDashboardModeration

Once banned, a person can no longer use commands on your server. That’s why unban appeals run through direct messages to yurna: the banned person answers your questions, your team gets the appeal with buttons in a channel and decides. The result goes back by DM.

The feature is off by default.

How to set it up#

  1. Create a team channel for appeals where yurna can view and send messages.
  2. Open Dashboard → Moderation → Case files → Settings tab → Unban appeals section.
  3. Turn on Accept unban appeals.
  4. Choose the Appeals channel.
  5. Set the waiting times and adjust the questions if you like. Save.
  6. Make sure DM on punishment (section “Punishments & points”) is on – otherwise the appeal button is missing from the ban DM.

Settings#

  • Earliest after (hours) – waiting time after the ban before an appeal is possible (0 to 8760, 0 = immediately).
  • After rejection again after (days) – cooldown after a rejection (0 to 3650, default 30, 0 = possible again immediately).
  • Questions – up to 10 custom questions. Each question has at most 100 characters, an answer length (Max. characters, 10 to 1000) and can be Required.

Without custom questions yurna uses three default questions in the applicant’s language: “Why were you banned?”, “Why should we unban you?” and “What will you do differently?”. Edit default questions copies them as a starting point for your own.

How banned users appeal#

There are two ways:

  1. Button in the ban DM: if the feature is on at the time of the ban, the DM about a ban or temporary ban includes a Request unban button.
  2. DM to yurna: the person sends yurna a direct message such as unban, ideally with the server name, e.g. unban My Server. yurna then searches by name or server ID – typos are fine – and only shows servers where the person is actually banned. At most 5 searches per hour are allowed.

Your questions then appear as a form (up to 5 questions per form). After submitting, the person gets a confirmation.

An appeal isn’t possible if the feature is off, an open appeal for this server already exists, the waiting time after the ban hasn’t passed yet or the cooldown after a rejection still applies.

Deciding on appeals#

In the channel, every appeal has three buttons:

  • Accept – unbans the person.
  • Accept + invite – unbans and sends a single-use invite by DM.
  • Reject – opens a form for an optional reason.

In the dashboard, Case files → Unban appeals tab lists all appeals. Open one to see the answers, the related ban case and earlier cases. Write a Reply to the applicant if you like (the reason when rejecting), tick Send an invite link by DM and click Accept & unban or Reject.

Only people with the Discord permission Ban Members can decide. The applicant gets the result by DM. If they were banned before case files existed, there’s no ban case – the appeal still works.

Common problems#

  • “The DM could not be delivered”: the person has closed their DMs. The decision still applies.
  • The person can’t find your server: yurna only shows servers where they are banned. The server ID helps with very similar names.
  • Unbanning fails: yurna needs “Ban Members”.

Unban appeals are included in every plan without limits.
