Ping roles don't work

Why a role or @everyone doesn't get notified – and how to get pings working for tickets and announcements.

RolesMessagesTroubleshooting

A role shows up in the message, but nobody gets notified? That's down to Discord's rules for mentions – and to yurna deliberately keeping pings to a minimum.

How Discord handles role pings#

A role mention only notifies members if one of these is true:

  • The role is mentionable (Server Settings → Roles → role → "Allow anyone to @mention this role"), or
  • the sender – yurna in this case – has the "Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles" permission in that channel.

Also: mentions inside an embed never trigger a notification, only mentions in the normal message text.

What yurna pings – and what it doesn't#

By default yurna only allows user pings in its messages. @everyone, @here and roles are only pinged where you explicitly set it up:

FeaturePings
TicketsThe ticket opener (if enabled) and the "Ping roles on open"
Announcements (scheduled messages and feeds)Only the selected ping roles – never @everyone or @here
FlowsAt most the user who triggered the flow – no roles, no @everyone
Milestones, invite rewardsOnly the member concerned; a role in the text shows up without a ping
Welcome messageNo ping – the message is an embed, and {user} is filled in as a name there
Suggestions, statistics reportsNo pings

Tickets: the role isn't notified#

You set ping roles under Dashboard → Support → Tickets, in the ticket category under "Ping roles on open". When a ticket is opened, yurna does this:

  1. If the role is mentionable or yurna may mention all roles, it pings directly.
  2. Otherwise yurna briefly makes the role mentionable, sends the ping and switches it straight back. For that, yurna needs "Manage Roles" and has to be above the role. yurna isn't allowed to change roles that belong to integrations or bots.
  3. If neither works, the role still appears in the text, and the ticket channel gets a note that the role wasn't notified.

The dashboard shows for each ping role whether the ping will arrive. "Make role mentionable" sets the role to mentionable in Discord permanently – but then every member can ping it.

Announcements: the role isn't notified#

You choose ping roles under Dashboard → Community → Announcements, per scheduled message or per feed. Roles that aren't mentionable only get pinged there if yurna may "Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles" in the target channel. yurna does not toggle roles briefly here. The message editor warns you when a selected role isn't mentionable.

Fixes at a glance#

  1. Make the role mentionable: Server Settings → Roles → role → "Allow anyone to @mention this role".
  2. Or allow yurna to "Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles" in the channel (yurna's role already gets this permission when it's invited).
  3. For tickets, also drag yurna's role above the ping roles.
  4. yurna never pings @everyone or @here. If you want to reach everyone, use a role that all members have – for example via the automatic role under Join & rules.
