Discord backup: save channels and messages

Back up categories, channels, permissions and messages with images – and restore them when things go wrong. Half Moon and up, also via /backup.

Requires Premium · Half MoonSetupCommandsPremiumSecurity

Requires Premium

This feature is available from the Half Moon plan.

The Discord backup saves your most important channels. If something goes wrong – a channel gets deleted or a raid wipes things – yurna brings back categories, channels, permissions and old messages.

You'll find it under Dashboard → Server & plan → Discord backup (/dashboard/<server>/discord-sicherung).

Premium

The Discord backup is available from Half Moon. Without a plan the page shows a preview. If it says "Coming soon", the feature isn't unlocked for your server yet.

In the dashboard#

Creating a backup#

  1. Open Server & plan → Discord backup.
  2. Under New backup, enter a Name.
  3. Under Channels with messages, pick the channels whose messages should be included. Leave it empty to back up only the structure and images.
  4. Set Messages per channel (up to what your plan allows). Maximum size optionally limits the storage.
  5. Choose what else to include: Back up images and files, Back up server icon and banner and Members' profile pictures (none, only authors of the saved messages, or all members up to 10,000).
  6. Tick I have read the privacy notice and click Start backup.

The structure (categories, channels, permissions) is always included. yurna saves messages from newest to oldest until a limit is reached. yurna works in the background – you can close the page.

Download, restore, delete#

Saved backups lists every backup with status, size and deletion date:

  • Download saves the backup as a .tar archive.
  • Restore opens a dialog. Choose Restore categories, channels and permissions and/or Resend messages (per channel). Optionally yurna adds day dividers between days – with time zone and language. Then click Start restore.
  • Delete removes the backup with all its files.

When restoring, yurna only creates what's missing. Existing channels stay as they are. Messages show the author's name and picture and the original time; nobody gets mentioned. Discord allows about 30 messages per minute and channel, so big channels take a while. Pause stops a running restore.

Daily structure snapshot#

Turn on the Daily structure snapshot and yurna remembers categories, channels and permissions every day (without messages). The last 7 are kept and don't count towards your backups.

Common questions#

Are roles backed up?#

No. yurna restores categories, channels, channel permissions and messages. Roles, threads, reactions and polls are not restored. If a role for a permission is missing, yurna lists it as a note.

Why does it say "Interrupted"?#

yurna restarted during the backup. You can still download the partial result. Otherwise just create a new backup.

How long are backups kept?#

As long as your plan says (30 or 90 days). After that yurna deletes them automatically. The deletion date is shown in the list.

Do I have to tell my members?#

Yes. Backups contain messages, files and profile pictures – personal data. Mention it in your rules.

Why can't I create a new backup?#

You've reached your plan's limit, or a backup or restore is already running. Delete an old one or wait a moment.
